Printfest 2011 - Printmaking Workshops – Help them Celebrate their Anniversary

Printfest invites you to join them for a free, drop in workshop with their Printmaker of the Year, Trevor Price. Participants can join in for an hour or stay for the whole day, and will be able to experiment with a variety of printmaking techniques and use a printing press.

Prints produced during the workshop will form part of the Celebration 10th anniversary print which will be unveiled at Printfest 2011 on Friday 29 April and Sunday 1 May 2011.

All are welcome although children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Canoeing at the FREE Easter Holiday Sports Programme
Thanks to Duddon Canoe Club we are now offering free canoe sessions for 8-15 year olds as part of our holiday sports programme.

Week 2 - Beginners
- Mon 18th, Thurs 21st - 1.30-3pm

OPEN TO EVERYONE …OPEN TO YOU

The Open University is well known for providing courses to suit people from all walks of life and we are keen to get more people on board from Cumbria. You don’t need qualifications to take most of our courses and there is a wide range of informative learning opportunities on offer. For example, you can explore your passion for arts, culture and society, try your hand at psychology, discover a new language or discover a taste for politics or philosophy. Learning is based around your needs, you don’t have to attend classes and depending on your household income, many courses are offered free or at a subsidised rate.

The Open University can also help groups study together by offering extra support throughout a course, so for example if you are part of a volunteering or carers group why not get together with the other members and choose something to learn together! This work is done through the Community Partnerships Team and we work with organisations who are interested in education and learning, whether this is in the workplace or community environment.

The ‘Apprenticed Actors Company’ return with a new play by Whitehaven writer, Alex Mullarky, winner of the ‘New Lines’ playwriting competition.

In a remote ruined church in West Cumbria, 4 teenagers meet up to drink lager, mess about and talk about the future. Avery plans to be an artist, Laurie needs a job, Adam hopes to join the army and Chris just wants to fit in.

Then 2 things happen which change their world, something right there in the ruins and something 3,567 miles away.

Come and watch Barrow’s brightest young actors perform a brand new play by a rising Cumbrian star.

Walking the Margins - Sunday 27th March 2011

A discover ‘hidden assets’ walk from Cemetery to Lowsy Point where we will tuck into hot, home-cooked food and mulled wine in one of the former fisherman’s cabins. Wrap up warm, wear water proof and comfortable footwear; bring some snacks and perhaps a flask of your favourite hot drink. Do bring a camera and binoculars if you have them.

Meet at 11am, Art Gene in the car park (off Collingwood Street) of the Nan Tait Centre, Abbey Road, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 5TY.

We will transport you by minibus to the Cemetery to start the walk. The walk will pass through marginal landscapes often ignored by passersby; a quarry, nature reserves and wonderful coastal views await us. Experts will be on hand to pepper the walk with short informal talks along the way.

Free Transport - To and from Art Gene is provided. Children - This is a long walk, not advisable for children under the age of 12.

The programme of activities originally planned for CLAF will be largely completed at the end of March 2011. The level of interest shown in the Forum over the last nine months has been encouraging and a dialogue is underway to find ways and means of sustaining its presence. Future Forum meetings will, however, be dependant on the outcome of these discussions.

Woodland Walks in Furness

Barrow Borough Council has funded a short programme of monthly woodland walks in the Furness area. There will be six excursions to woodland sites a short journey out from Barrow.

25 May 2011 – Bardsea Sea Wood and Birkrigg

22 June 2011 – Dalton – Millwood

27 July 2011 – Kirkby Park Wood Grizebeck
