Art Gene - a Cabinet of Curiosities

Art Gene invite you to contribute to a
Cabinet of Curiosities
- wonders of the natural, industrial and cultural heritage of Barrow in Furness and the Islands of Barrow at the Ship Inn, Piel Island.

A portrait of a place.
Art Gene are creating a Cabinet of Curiosities within the Ship Inn on Piel Island, in partnership with Barrow Borough Council.

With your help, this will be no ordinary collection.

Throughout December, they will be compiling objects, images and stories from every era …
together these will tell of the intertwining social, natural and industrial heritage of Barrow.

We’d love you to contribute an object, a memory … your experience of Barrow and the coast. All sources will be acknowledged – it’s your chance to be represented in the history of Barrow.

Ever find a mermaids purse?
Does your Nana pickle Sea Purslane?
Did you honeymoon on Piel?
What are the most intriguing tools of your trade?
Do you keep paper cuttings and photos of the past?

If you would like to learn more about the project, or to contribute something … please feel free to call or email ...

Michaela Nettell's video projections on glass explore ideas of illusion, impermanence and flight. Rosalind Davis' mixed-media paintings focus on structures that appear neglected but which are of vital importance to the individuals who use them. Curated by Irina Stark.

Expect fireworks as Zircus Plus gets off to an explosive start

A spectacular new open air show from one of the UK’s leading performance groups will light up the skies above Cumbria as part of this year's international circus festival Zircus Plus on 15-17 July.

The award-winning NoFit State Circus will unveil their new work Barricade in Barrow Park on 15 July for a night of highly-skilled aerial acrobatics, physical drama and breathtaking pyrotechnics.

Starting at 9pm, the free Big Friday Night will see Barrow Park transformed into a beautiful aerial playground complete with an iconic set designed by Dan Potra who helped to produce the Delhi Commonwealth Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Circus imagery, acrobatic skills, and inspiring music created by the Immortal Orchestra will be used to produce an astounding show that pushes the boundaries of contemporary circus to its limits. With pre-entertainment from the Barracudas, Barrow Carnival Bands and the UK’s leading trick cyclist Paddy Waters it promises to be a night to remember. The event will climax with a dramatic firework display from pa-Boom that will be seen for miles around.

Another key performance to look forward to at this year’s Zircus Plus comes from Italian Compagnie Piano C who will bring a touch of magic to Barrow with their award-winning show Senza Che. Taking nothing more than a few simple items including a bin and a cardboard box, the performers conjure up a bitter sweet show that elevates rubbish to an art form.Using humour, poetry and drama, the group inspire audiences to think about issues such as homelessness, freedom and wealth.

Heartland features aerial performers swooping through the sky entwined in swathes of fabric. Inspired by the legend of Minotaur, this new piece of work fuses music, dance and storytelling in thrilling style.

For the first time there will also be a series of performances in the Forum in Barrow aimed at adults and children aged eight or above. From PanGottic Circus Theatre comes Full Twist, an upbeat silent comedy about falling in love. This award-winning show blends physical theatre, clowning, masks and contemporary theatre to create incredible drama without using a single word.

Also making their debut at the Forum is French team DeFracto who will present their hilarious show Circuits-Fermes. It's an extremely funny and highly skilled show that has captivated audiences across Europe and will make its UK premiere at Zircus Plus. The shows will run on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July at 7.30pm. Tickets for the double bill cost £6 (full price), £4 (concession) and a friends and family ticket for 5 people is £20. Tickets are available now from The Forum.

On the Saturday 16 July and Sunday 17 July the hub of the festival takes place in Barrow Park where 15 companies from across the world will excite and delight you with a mix of antics and acrobatics.

From Germany comes Aristokraten - an animation show that combines acrobatics, music and satire in one heady mix.

Laughs aplenty will also be provided by George Orange, an eccentric clown and slack-rope dancer from Chicago. His Man on the Moon show takes children and adults on an amazing trip to the moon and back.

Bicycle Ballet will dazzle audiences with an outdoor dance show performed on bikes. Starring trick cycling specialist Paddy Waters, this new piece of work uses dance, circus and physical theatre to look at differing male and female approaches to their bikes. It all adds up to a fun and frenetic performance that will leave audiences shaken and stirred.

Away from Barrow Park, Zircus Plus will be invading Dalton Road on Saturday with a selection of great street acts to entertain shoppers.

All of the outdoor shows are free and suitable for all the family.

This year’s Zircus Plus also includes an art exhibition Brief Permanence at Art Gene. Curated by Irina Stark, it is a mixed-media exhibition exploring the meaning and contradictions of circus through the works of three British artists.

A free all-day Design Cafe visit to Brockholes Nature Reserve

Art Gene - FREE Design cafe trip on Friday 15th July 2011

'Adam Khan is one of the most inspiring, original and committed architects of his generation.’ Jon Snow, Broadcaster.

The Lancashire Wildlife Trust has developed Brockholes Nature Reserve, near Preston wetland area and former mine into a floating visitor centre, and nature reserve working with Adam Khan Architects, London.

Adam Khan Architects’ scheme was chosen, through an international competition of 61 European architects, for its inspirational design concept: "A Floating World".

Designed as a cluster of buildings constructed largely of wood and other sustainable materials, it resembles an ancient marshland village.

The centre includes wetlands, ponds, seeded meadows supporting a heard of longhorn cattle, new hedgerows, trees and bird watching hides made accessible via newly created paths. Volunteers have helped propagate 20,000 reed seedlings that are now planted around the architecturally inspiring visitors centre.

We are delighted that Adam Khan has agreed to join our trip, talking about both his approach to the commission, the process of developing the scheme and its final design and construction. This is a unique opportunity to talk directly with the architect about his inspirational scheme that enhances the natural environment with high quality contemporary architecture and design and the use of sustainable construction materials.

Disabled access: There is disabled access around some of the trails and the visitors centre is fully accessible. Currently the centre does not have ‘tramper’ wheelchairs to loan. Our bus is not wheelchair accessible but there is storage for collapsed wheelchairs.

Art Gene Design Café Events for 2011

Wednesday 9th March 2011 at Art Gene, Nan Tait Centre, Abbey Rd from 6.15 for 7pm start.

The second serving in a new series of Art Gene Design Café Events for 2011...

Join in for a Public Discussion and Debate with expert panelists!

Barrow has a rich tradition of allotment gardening and self-build vernacular architecture. Can Permaculture and the Transition Towns movement help to create a better, more sustainable future for Barrow?

Panelists;
Jennifer Lauruaol (Founder of Transition City Lancaster)
Edward Acland (Small holder and Permaculturist)
Steve Robson (Neighbourhood Manager, Barrow Borough Council)
Stuart Bastik (Artist / Founder, Art Gene)

Can we build upon and expand our thriving allotment culture in an attempt to move towards sustainability?
Can we empower our communities to take a more proactive role in defining the future of our town and future lifestyles?

Have you ever wanted to...
Have your own allotment?
Grow your own food?
Generate your own power?
Build an eco friendly house?
Starting an organic allotment or planting an apple tree are tremendously empowering acts, and positive steps towards creating healthy self-reliant communities.

Permaculture
"Creating abundant and sustainable human habitats by following nature’s patterns". Primarily permaculture is a design system- a way of making links and connections ... to maximise their efficiency in creating a self sustaining, low input/high output, non-exploiting whole.

"You haven't got an excess of slugs, you’ve got a duck deficiency…" Bill Mollison

At its essence, permaculture is about making real that other 'green truism', 'Think Globally Act Locally'. For cliché or not, that is where the future lies if we are to have one. Graham Burne

What exactly is a Transition Town?
A Transition Initiative (which could be a town, village, university or island etc) is a community-led response to the pressures of climate change, fossil fuel depletion and increasingly, economic contraction. There are thousands of initiatives around the world starting their journey to answer this crucial question:

Transition Towns (also known as Transition network or Transition Movement) is a brand for environmental and social movements “founded (in part) upon the principles of permaculture”, based originally on Bill Mollison’s seminal 'Permaculture, a Designers Manual' published in 1988. Following its start in Kinsale, Ireland it then spread to Totnes, England. The aim of this community project is to equip communities for the dual challenges of climate change and peak oil. The Transition Towns movement is an example of socioeconomic localisation.

Art Gene-Design Cafe 2011, Islands of Barrow - Panel discussion and debate

Wednesday 9 February 2011 at Art Gene Nan Tait Centre, Abbey Road, Barrow in Furness from 6.15pm for buffet and drinks for a 7pm start until 9pm. No need to book just come along.

Join us for a Public Discussion and Debate with expert panelists:

Question: Can more users be introduced to the Natural Environment of Barrow Borough without damage? If so how?

1/2 of Barrow: Nearly 50% of Barrow Borough is made up of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's), Wetlands of International Importance (RAMSAR's), Special Protection Areas or are designated as a Special Area of Conservation.

... So why don't these areas play a larger role in defining external perceptions of the Borough?
Do we need more infrastructure and buildings? If so what should they be? What are the guiding principles we should consider when planning for sustainable development?

Please join us for good food and what promises to be a relaxed, friendly yet rigorous examination of the issues and an opportunity to contribute your thoughts to a discussion around how we might develop our natural environment, and the challenges we will have to overcome along the way.

Design Cafe - Tales of an URBAN WANDERER

An evening of conversation and good company with free home cooked food at Art Gene, The Nan Tait Centre, Abbey Road, Barrow-in-Furness this Wednesday 17th November, 7pm - 9.30pm

No booking necessary just come along on the night.

During September, artist Sophie Mellor spent eight days as an urban wanderer relying on the kindness of strangers and the bounty of the land to house and feed her.
People followed her journey via daily updates on BBC Radio Cumbria, as her travels took her around Barrow, out to Aldingham and back again. Spending five nights out of seven housed by local people and never once going hungry, her wanderings illustrated the wealth of generosity in the town. Clothed in an especially designed survival jacket by Clare Thornton, she placed herself directly in Barrow's marginalised landscapes, investing in its use and beauty through her interactions with people and place.

For this free evenings talk, Sophie will tell tales from her journey - chatting about essentials for urban survival, different ways to navigate the town, Barrow's wild food treasures, the luxury of choosing to wander the streets and how to keep warm and dry in a hedge.

Urban Wanderer 'Urban Retreat'. Urban Retreat was a series of artists commissions and events which explored the economic and ecological landscape of Barrow-in-Furness in Sept/Oct 2010.

Other events in the Urban Retreat programme included:
- Street Training with Lottie Child
- Wasteland Drawing Walk with Laura Oldfield Ford
- Urban Nature Walk with Martin Norris (warden at South Walney Nature Reserve)
- Survival Bag Workshop with Clare Thornton.

During the project, Barrow Library hosted the 'Urban Retreat Lending Library' with books donated by Urban Retreat artists and patrons. Each book featured an especially designed book plate by Karen Di Franco.

In Spring 2011, Close and Remote will publish a book exploring the themes around the project, including new writing by Emma Cocker.

Island of Barrow - A Design Cafe Event - Wednesday 20th October 7.00-9.00pm

'Islands of Barrow' - A Design Cafe Event

Wednesday 20th October 7.00-9.00pm

An informal evening of short artist’s films about Barrow and an opportunity to meet and talk with international film and sound artists Eimer Birkbeck and Joe Duffy.

Joe and Eimer will be taking a fresh look at some of Barrow’s unheralded natural and hidden gems. Often working from a seaborne perspective their work focuses particularly on the often forgotten 'Islands of Barrow' and the people they discovered there.

This event is one in a series taking place over the next few months that will inform the work that Art Gene is undertaking with Barrow Borough Council to develop a sensitive, unique and creative response to the development of the Barrow coastline and the islands of Barrow.

Everyone is welcome – it’s a relaxed and interesting way to spend an evening.

The evening is free and that includes the food and drink.

Venue: Art Gene, The Nan Tait Centre, Abbey Road, Barrow.
