Karen.....stilt walking, green screen filming, and first to hear Hayleigh's new song

Hi everyone. The activities are continuing to run well and I am really impressed to see the progress people are making. 

In the Barracudas stilt group, many of the young people have now progressed onto medium sized stilts, which makes me feel even shorter! There are also some new young people who have started their stilt walking journey. Anyone who fancies a go is more than welcome to join. Although I am nowhere near brave enough to get up on them myself, I have learnt how to tie up the stilts, and feel quite proud of my achievements.

I was recently involved in the workshops held by Signal films. These were to give young people a chance to try out some different aspects of filming and media and to give a taste of what is happening in their summer project. I had a great time learning about animation, green screen filming and creating a magazine cover. I met some amazing young people who had great ideas. I think we may have some budding future media stars. It was immense fun doing the workshops and meeting all the staff and young people ... I look forward to doing more in the summer.

I have also been blown away by the growing musical talent being shown in The Relics music sessions.

The following is a song written by Hayleigh Coombs, aged 12. Hayleigh attended the Inspiring Communities launch event in April and has since become involved in both the Relics music session and Barracudas as a dancer. This song was written entirely by Hayleigh in the music session on Tuesday 29th June 2010.

Barrow Sports Council's FREE Summer Holiday Sports Programme

Barrow Sports Council's traditional holiday sports programme at Furness Academy South site will start on Monday 26th July.

Sessions will run on Monday to Friday from 2pm to 4pm until August 27th.

That's five weeks of free sport! Free outdoor activities for boys and girls aged 8 to 15 - football, cricket, tag rugby, rounders, orienteering, tennis and lots more. As usual they will also have use of the Barrow Table Tennis Centre every day.

Dance Mats

There will also be free dance mat sessions at the Park Leisure Centre at 2pm on the same days (please register at the Park Leisure Centre).

Throughout the five weeks the following free sessions will also be running;

Tuesdays 27th July, 10th, 17th, 24th August 10.30am-12 noon – Dowdales School fields Dalton

Wednesdays and Fridays 11am-12 noon – every week starting on Wednesday 28th July - Hindpool Urban Park

Thursdays 29th July, 12th, 19th, 26th August 10.30am-12 noon – Walney School fields

There is no need to book on any of the above activities.

Barrow Carnival Saturday 26 June

Barrow Carnival takes place in the town centre on Saturday 26th June and features The Barracudas, Dalton Town Band, Boom Dang, dance troupes, floats, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and much more.

Dance troupes start outside the town hall at 9.30am, parade starts at 12 noon.

Re-imagining Barrow - A unique opportunity for young people aged 18-30 to make a real difference

Design Champions – an invitation

Free trips to great places, evenings of good food, drink and a chance to talk sense at least once a month with like-minded people; and all in Barrow! Interested, astonished even?

Well don’t be, Art Gene (who have been based in Barrow for 10 years) are leading a multi-disciplinary team of its associate artists, designers, engineers, architects and regeneration specialists from all over the world in 12 months of intensive design schemes aimed at improving the physical environment of Barrow and the Furness Peninsula.

Art Gene are seeking energetic, imaginative, aspirational young people living or working in Barrow (between the ages of 18 and 30) to get involved for 12 months and have their say about what kind of Barrow we want to build for the future. Absolutely no previous experience or knowledge of design is required.

This really is a unique offer, to form a fun social group for at least 12 months that can nevertheless make a real difference to the future of Barrow; without formalities but with plenty of common sense and a fair bit of energy. We have given this project the name Design Cafe, reflecting how relaxed we want it to be.

Up for it? Want to know more? Put 6pm-8pm, Monday 5th July in your diary and drop in to the Art Gene Gallery at the Nan Tait Centre, Abbey Road, Barrow. As you will probably be coming straight from work there will be good food and drink and an informal chat which may end up on the beach if weather permits.

Womens & Girls Sports Day 2010

Furness Academy South Site and Duddon Canoe Club, Sunday 4th July 2010 - 1pm - 5pm

This FREE event is an excellent way for women of all ages to try something different, make friends, learn new skills and improve their health. The day will include a series of 4 FREE 45 minute taster sessions every hour on the hour between 1pm and 5pm, allowing you to try out four different sports. No equipment needed, just come along appropriately dressed. Throughout the day there will be demonstrations, tournaments, coaching and taster sessions. Everyone who takes part on the day will receive a FREE goody bag!

Activities on offer on the day include Athletics, Rugby League, Cheerleading, Football, Canoeing, Orienteering, Power Kites, Walking, Table Tennis, Cricket, Dance Mats, Step, Body Pump, Hip Hop, Spinning and Rounders. The canoeing is taking place down Cavendish Docks and the Orienteering starts from the Pavilion in Barrow Park

The FREE multi-sports day aims to encourage females to participate in physical activity at any level, from recreational to competition.

Barrow Borough Sports Council wants to help women and girls in sport and is committed to helping organisations and individuals maximise the potential that women and girls offer. Each sport on offer on the day has an exit route to a club that women can join.

Exciting free workshops for 11-14-year-olds from Central and Hindpool Wards

Signal Films is offering special free workshops after school and on the weekend in June led by professional filmmakers, designers and animators.

Come along and find out how to:

• Be a Cover Star – learn how to take pictures and use Photoshop to create effects and your own magazine cover or movie poster

• Animate Yourself – create a character, get it moving and give it a voice, sounds and music

• Star in Your Own Film – find out how to use blue screen effects and create your own backdrops like they do in the movies!

Signal Films at Forum 28

Media Adventures youth campaign (Friday 4th-Tuesday 15th June)

A youth media campaign created by local 13-19 year olds will be making a splash at the Forum in June. The eye-catching work is part of a year-long ‘Routes & Shoots’ project which addresses youth issues in new and engaging ways. The campaign consists of posters, animations and photography created to inspire and encourage local young people to get out and about, enjoy the areas assets such as beautiful landscapes and to try new things. As well as displays at The Forum, you can expect to see their colourful campaign around Barrow from the end of May, featuring in local bus stops, shop fronts and Barrow’s train station amongst other venues!

The group decided on their campaign logo which features the two 'Bs' from ‘beyond boundaries’ in the shape of a butterfly after Peter (14 yrs) said the group research trip to Gummers Howe had made him “... feel free and like he could do anything”.

The young people have been developing the ideas and brand for the campaign with Kendal based graphic designer and Creative Director of Lavahouse, Steve Scott. He said of the project “Working with these young people has been an inspiring experience for me and I have been extremely impressed by the talent and vision that these young people from Barrow have.”

Signal Films ‘Best Of’ (Friday 18th-Tuesday 29th June)

A selection of the best from Signal Films activities this past year will also be on show to celebrate the diverse range of mixed media work which has been created with local talent. There will also be the chance to sign up for Signal Films’ new upcoming programme of free events and training.

Inspiring Communities: The first few weeks

All about me:
Hi all, I’m Karen Whitehouse and I’m one of the youth workers working on the Inspiring Communities project.

I’ve been a youth worker for eight years and have recently earned my DipHE in Youth and Community Development Work at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster. I’m also going back there in September to top that up to a BA(Hons).

I’ve worked with a number of young people in the past eight years and have been lucky enough to organise lots of activities with them. These have included:

• Circus skills
• Residential trips
• Arts and crafts
• Cooking
• Day trips
• Sports

And have been able to help young people gain many certificates and awards.

I look forward to meeting lots of new young people through this project and supporting them in a number of activities.

Street Soccer

We have attended the street soccer sessions that were run at the Hindpool MUGA. It was great to meet so many budding footballers and to get to know the regular attendees over the weeks. We sometimes took part in the games and I learnt that I am not cut out as a goalie!

It was also good to meet those that attended the sessions as spectators. We spent a lot of time talking with those people and often making up our own games with one or two of the spare footballs. We are looking forward to the sessions starting up again at Greengate Junior School.

The Relics

The Relics tuition sessions are a great way for the young people to develop their musical abilities. There is so much going on with the singers, guitarists and drummers, the workers split up and work both upstairs and downstairs so we can make the most of our time there. Whilst the musicians are developing their skills week by week, the singers are expressing themselves through words and one or two have even begun to write their own songs. It has been very inspiring reading these new lyrics and great that the young people want to share their talents.

Barracudas

This session is split into two sections: the drumming workshop and the carnival practice.

I’ve quickly discovered that drumming is not my forte but I hope that points for trying makes up for the shortfall in talent.

During the carnival practice I have been working with the stilt walkers and continue to be amazed and impressed with their courage and abilities. My main role is to support and encourage the newer members to the group, and have become a dab hand at helping people get their balance and helping them up when they fall.

What has been particularly good is seeing how some young people attend more than one activity, and that some of them got involved after the launch event. I have been talking to some of these people and will hopefully have some personal testimonies to share with you all soon.
