Barrow Sports Council names its Service to Sport Award after the late Pat Ryan

Barrow Sports Council had announced that it is naming its Service to Sport Award after the late Pat Ryan.

Pat, who passed away earlier this year, was a founding member of Barrow Sports Council and it's predecessor, Barrow Sports Advisory Committee.

Although Pat was best known for his long standing commitment to amateur boxing, he also gave support to the wider sporting community. For many years he ran the Barrow Sports Awards almost single handed.

Sports Council Chair Tony Callister said the Service to Sport Awards were very close to Pat's heart. "Pat put in many hours supporting youngsters to get involved in sport and he was very supportive of others who did the same.  The Service to Sport Awards recognises people like Pat who dedicate their lives to supporting others to get into sport.

Barrow Sports Council now has some supporting staff to help organise events but for several years, Pat ran the Sports Awards events on his own. We added awards in recent years but without doubt, his favourite award was always the Service to Sport.

We hope Pat will be looking down on our next award ceremony in November with some pride."

The first Pat Ryan Service to Sport Awards will be presented at Barrow Town Hall at this year's Sports Awards on Friday 18 November.

The Sports Council is hoping the new Pat Ryan Awards will be presented by a member of the Ryan family.
