His latest book 'The English Lakes' was published by Bloomsbury in April 2010 and is a superb, beautifully illustrated history of one of Britain’s favourite regions.

"He (Thompson) reckons that he owes his existence to the tradition of working-class fell-walking, since much of his parents’ courtship was conducted when they were out for the day with the Barrow and District Ramblers. He started fell-walking as a child, and remembers teetering along Striding Edge on Helvellyn with other Barrow Grammar School boys, hoping the gale would not get under their cycle capes and lift them off."
