Art Gene invite you to contribute to a

Cabinet of Curiosities

- wonders of the natural, industrial and cultural heritage of Barrow in Furness and the Islands of Barrow at the Ship Inn, Piel Island.

Art Gene are creating a Cabinet of Curiosities within the Ship Inn on Piel Island, in partnership with Barrow Borough Council.

With your help, this will be no ordinary collection.

Throughout December, they will be compiling objects, images and stories from every era …

together these will tell of the intertwining social, natural and industrial heritage of Barrow.

We’d love you to contribute an object, a memory … your experience of Barrow and the coast. All sources will be acknowledged – it’s your chance to be represented in the history of Barrow.

Ever find a mermaids purse?

Does your Nana pickle Sea Purslane?

Did you honeymoon on Piel?

What are the most intriguing tools of your trade?

Do you keep paper cuttings and photos of the past?

Barrow's Wildside at North Scale Pond

Barrow's Wildside is an exciting project that aims to improve green spaces in Barrow for wildlife and the local community. Being outside and closer to nature improves your well being too! Loads of exciting plans are being planned for young and old alike. You and your family can get involved in walks, training, practical conservation work.

Fancy doing something different? Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn about wildlife and help to make positive improvements for wildlife. No previous experience is necessary, and tools and training are provided.

The pond at North Scale is being shaded by willow.
We will be coppicing some of this to benefit the pond
life on Walney. Please bring suitable outdoor clothes
and footwear, wellies if you have them, and a packed lunch.

Making it wild at Sandscale Haws

Sat 26 November 10.00am-3.00pm.

We will be cutting trees and shrubs (mainly hawthorn and willow species) with hand tools. This is essential work to preserve the rare coastal grassland habitats and the wealth of plant species that they support on the nature reserve. If conditions are good we may also have a bonfire to burn the brash material. Bring a packed lunch and drink. Wear old clothes, stout boots or wellies and bring waterproofs if needed. We will be installing a special nesting box for shellducks on one of the islands at North Walney Nature Reserve, to help protect these ground nesting birds from predators. Barrow & District Disability Association Presents - 'Some Enchanted Evening'

Friday 25 November 2011 at St James Church, Barrow in Furness, at 7.30pm.

This special charity concert is supported by three well known local musical groups and a charity who this year are all celebrating anniversaries. Featuring Dalton Town Band, The Ghyll Singers and Barrow Male Voice Choir.

Tue 24 January 7.30pm-8.30pm 'Conservation grazing with native cattle'. Grazing animals are increasingly being used to manage nature reserves to improve habitats and promote bio-diversity. Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s Field Officer, Ruth Dalton, talks about her first hand experiences of conservation grazing and her current work with the ‘Rare Breeds Survival Trust’. No need to book but seats are allocated on a first come

Walks - join a guided walk and learn something new about local wild places and the wildlife on your doorstep.

Wed 16 November 2.00pm-4.00pm 'Have a gander at the grey seals!'. Did you know there are seals at South Walney Nature Reserve? Join us for a wander down to the end of the reserve where, if we’re lucky, we can spot them larking about in the calm waters off the spit. The walk is approximately 3 miles along a rough track and footpaths. Dogs are not allowed on the nature reserve. Call Nikki Taylor on 01229 471066 to book or for further information. We will walk from Cavendish Dock towards Rampside, cutting back the overhanging vegetation and  picking up any litter we see on the way. Come an​d discuss the progress following our initial meeting and the response from Barrow Borough Council. Talk with others interested in developing their own self-managed allotment group from 6.00pm.
