Get online week 18-24 October
Encouraging millions more internet users in the UK by 2012.
This week is get online week (18-24 October), aimed at helping people get started with computers and the internet.
Currently there are nine million adults in the UK who have never used the internet. Race online 2012, the organisation behind get online week, was set-up to address this by helping millions more people – particularly the elderly and disadvantaged – get online by the end of 2012.
“It is often the people facing the toughest times who have the most to gain from what technology has to offer”, said Martha Lane Fox, UK Digital Champion and founder of Race Online 2012. “The internet is rapidly becoming a tool for everyday life, we should work together to make sure everyone can benefit.”
You can find your nearest get online week events run by Barrow Library group, see the poster below for details. You can also use the get online week website (http://www.ukonlinecentres.com/) to run a get online week event or to help a friend or family member get online. Why not help your friends, family or neighbours take the step to get online - help them set up an email address a social network account or help them find their interests online whetehr that be music, books, film, food or whatever - why not help someone today?

Island of Barrow - A Design Cafe Event - Wednesday 20th October 7.00-9.00pm
'Islands of Barrow' - A Design Cafe Event
Wednesday 20th October 7.00-9.00pm
An informal evening of short artist’s films about Barrow and an opportunity to meet and talk with international film and sound artists Eimer Birkbeck and Joe Duffy.
Joe and Eimer will be taking a fresh look at some of Barrow’s unheralded natural and hidden gems. Often working from a seaborne perspective their work focuses particularly on the often forgotten 'Islands of Barrow' and the people they discovered there.
This event is one in a series taking place over the next few months that will inform the work that Art Gene is undertaking with Barrow Borough Council to develop a sensitive, unique and creative response to the development of the Barrow coastline and the islands of Barrow.
Everyone is welcome – it’s a relaxed and interesting way to spend an evening.
The evening is free and that includes the food and drink.
Venue: Art Gene, The Nan Tait Centre, Abbey Road, Barrow.
